No wonder these continue to be such popular saxophones. Each of the Yamaha models has its strengths and weaknesses, but as far as I am concerned, the purple label 62’s are easily the best made so far. Compared to later Yamahas, this one is warmer, more complex, and more like a vintage Selmer (which was Yamaha’s starting point for the early 62 it seems to me), but with better intonation and a more even scale. It is in fantastic condition and is a very early example of the professional YTS-62 model with the purple label or logo. And Yamahas like this are also really easy to get worked on down the road and to keep in good adjustment. This is a Very clean Yamaha YTS-62 purple logo Tenor Saxophone. It can be hard to find a tenor that plays this well for anything like this price. It won’t need anything more than minor upkeep for the next several years, and it is super easy and responsive across all registers. From the top range of student horns right up to the highest level professional range Yamaha has a sax for every level and style of playing.

Plus, this tenor just got a complete overhaul and is all freshly repadded and ready to go for a nice long time. Yamaha Saxophones are proven to be solid, reliable, and exquisitely engineered saxophones for students and pros alike. You get all the tone, comfortable ergonomics, dependability and ease of playing of a 62 for less money. The 52 from the same era is virtually the identical saxophone, with the same bore, neck, body tube and everything. The core tone is moldable by the player to a degree, but not. It is lightweight yet durable, and comes with a professional-quality 62-style neck for a more mature quality of sound. Actually the core tone character (or more properly lack of) is the Achilles tendon of Yamaha horns in my opinion. With a design influenced by high-end Yamaha saxophones, the YTS-480 features highly accurate intonation, a warm tone and a quick response. I wouldnt exactly call the tone inherently warm compared to many other saxophones.

Also, the entire body has been annealed for a rich resonant sound. One of the biggest new improvements to it is the G2 neck, which gives a better response and more playing flexibility.
